The Art of Self-Love on the Road: How I Thrived During a Non-Stop 9-Day Trip
Travel can be both exhilarating and overwhelming—especially for highly sensitive people. Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a multi-stop adventure, the constant moving, the transitions, and doing for others can easily lead to burnout. After many rough travel experiences, I’ve learned a thing or two.
Recently, I embarked on a 9-day whirlwind trip with my kids—5 destinations packed with activities, and visits. We started with a lacrosse showcase in Massachusetts, moved on to a prospect day in Providence, RI, and ended with family visits across 3 different places in New Jersey. My husband couldn’t join us until the last 3 days, so I was solo parenting for much of the trip.
Normally, that would have sent me into overwhelm, but not this time!
I’m so grateful for the practices I’ve learned along my healing journey that allowed me to stay grounded and connected to myself, even amidst the chaos. Instead of being completely drained by the trip, I was present and able to receive the joy along the journey.
As a highly sensitive woman who’s often lived in overwhelm, I’m incredibly proud of myself for navigating this trip with so much ease. This is a big win, and I’m celebrating it with you! We don’t celebrate ourselves enough, so if you’ve got something—big or small—that you want to celebrate, I’m here to witness and cheer you on, always. Email me at divinelysensitive@gmail.com
So, how did I do it?
How did I stay centered and connected while managing all the moving parts of this trip? Not to mention all the energies around me. Empaths, I see you and I know you see me!
It came down to practice and planning.
1. I HAD A PLAN:
I organized everything ahead of time with a detailed note on my phone. I listed all the hotels, schools, restaurants, addresses, and maps—everything I might need—so I could easily access it without stress.
2. I TENDED TO MY ENERGY:
Before we left, I spent time grounding myself in Luna Garden, soaking up stability and confidence from the earth below me. I set intentions for the trip, calling in protection, presence, fun, and love while releasing any fears, anxieties, or doubts.
3. I NURTURED AND LOVED MYSELF:
Throughout the trip, I made sure to stay connected to myself. I packed nourishing (and not so nourishing;) snacks, communicated my needs to my kids, and practiced self-healing Reiki each night. I released lingering energy in the shower, stretched my body, and listened to uplifting music. I also pulled Oracle cards for a sprinkle of magic, indulged in a great book, and practiced intentional breathing.
4. I ALLOWED FOR RECOVERY TIME:
On our last day, I ordered groceries online and looked over the calendar for the week ahead. So grateful to my past self for blocking out the first couple of mornings after returning home for rest. I’ve learned that recovery time is crucial after travel, especially as a highly sensitive person.
Side Note: I used to get so down on myself and think something was wrong with me. Most people around me could travel, come home, and jump back in. I was always so drained. I needed recovery time. Turns out this is common for highly sensitive people. So if this is YOU, you’re not alone, friend. Take the time to recover it makes all the difference when you do jump back in!
